Donegal Castle

Standing beside the River Eske in the centre of Donegal Town, Donegal Castle is one of the county’s most important historic attractions. The castle was built by the O’Donnell chieftains in the 15th century and was later extended by Sir Basil Brooke during the 17th century.
Inside, visitors can explore the restored rooms, stone stairways, fireplaces and furnished great hall while learning about the families and events that shaped the castle’s history. Its central location makes it particularly easy to include in a day around Donegal Town, with shops, cafés and restaurants all close by.
Most of the visit takes place indoors, making Donegal Castle a very useful attraction to keep in mind when the weather turns wet.
