The Workhouse, Dunfanaghy

Workhouse Dunfanaghy
Built in 1845, The Workhouse in Dunfanaghy is one of Ireland’s original famine workhouses. Today, the restored building is a heritage and community centre that tells the story of An Gorta Mór, the workhouse system and the lives of local people during one of the most difficult periods in Irish history. Visitors can explore the famine exhibition and discover the story of Wee Hannah, a local woman whose life provides a moving connection to the building’s past. The centre also includes a cinema, craft shop and coffee shop, with a children’s playpark and heritage trail outdoors. The main historical experience is indoors, making The Workhouse an especially useful place to visit during wet weather. It is located close to the centre of Dunfanaghy and works well as part of a day exploring the village and northwest Donegal.
