Fort Dunree, Inishowen

Fort Dunree occupies a dramatic position on the western side of the Inishowen Peninsula, looking across Lough Swilly towards the Fanad Peninsula. The site’s defensive history stretches back to the early 19th century, and its museum exhibitions explore the fort’s military role, coastal artillery and the lives of those stationed there.
Visitors can see military artefacts, displays and preserved defensive structures across the lower fort. The museum provides a substantial indoor element, while the surrounding paths, upper fort and viewpoints can be enjoyed whenever the weather allows.
The scenery is a major part of the experience, with wide views over Lough Swilly and the nearby coastline. There is also a café on site. Because parts of Fort Dunree are outdoors and the ground varies, visitors should wear suitable footwear and allow extra time if they plan to explore beyond the museum buildings.
